Can you value cards for an estate or a divorce?
In short: Yes. A written appraisal states the value as of a specific date, usually fair market value, so an executor, the parties or their attorneys can divide or report the collection on the same basis.
Estates and divisions of property need a value as of a date: the date of death, or a date the parties or the court set. The report names that date and the definition of value it uses.
Because I never buy the cards or take part in a sale, neither side has to wonder whether the appraiser wants the collection. Where both parties rely on one report, that independence is what makes it acceptable to both.
